LUCA MAFFEI
Italian-born perfumer Luca Maffei is the creative force behind Atelier Fragranze Milano. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the fragrance industry, Maffei's passion for scents was nurtured from a young age. He has since become an accomplished independent perfumer, working with numerous prestigious brands and garnering international recognition for his creations.
Born to fragrance executive Marco Maffei, Luca was surrounded by scents from an early age. His father worked at both Symrise and International Flavors and Fragrances, exposing young Luca to lab samples and meetings with renowned perfumers like Dominique Ropion and Michel Almairac. This upbringing sparked Luca's fascination with raw materials and the mysterious alchemy of fragrance creation.
Initially pursuing a career in the business side of the fragrance industry, Maffei soon realized his true calling lay in the creative realm of perfumery. To further his passion, he traveled to Grasse, the world's perfume capital, to study under Madame Françoise Marin, former director of the Roure perfumery school. After apprenticing with Vincent Ricord, Maffei began working closely with master perfumer Maurizio Cerizza, who encouraged him to compete in The Scent of Excellence Contest at Esxence. Maffei's submission, Iris Magnifica, became a top-five finalist.
Launching Atelier Fragranze Milano, Luca Maffei became a Société Française des Parfumeurs (SFP) member in 2014. Since then, he has created over 50 perfumes for both mainstream and niche brands, as well as air scents and candles. Maffei's creations, Black Pepper & Sandalwood by Acca Kappa and Néa by JUL ET MAD Paris, won the Independent Category at the 2015 and 2016 Art and Olfaction Awards in Los Angeles.
Maffei has collaborated with a wide array of brands, including Acca Kappa, Aedes de Venustas, Alyssa Ashley, Carthusia, Histoires de Parfums, Jul et Mad Paris, and Perris Monte Carlo, to name a few. Some of his most popular perfumes include Masque Milano L'Attesa, Jul et Mad Paris Néa, Histoires de Parfums This Is Not A Blue Bottle 1.2, Carthusia Terra Mia, and Perris Monte Carlo Rose de Taif.
Luca Maffei's unique approach to perfume creation stems from his childhood fascination with raw materials and the alchemy of scents. His innate curiosity and passion for exploration have led him to develop a diverse and captivating portfolio. Maffei's creations are inspired by his Italian heritage, travels, and the various brands he collaborates with, resulting in a versatile and innovative range of fragrances.
As an independent perfumer, Luca Maffei has significantly impacted the world of fragrance through his creative vision and dedication to the art of perfumery. His contributions to both mainstream and niche brands have earned him international recognition and awards. With his continued passion and innovation, Maffei is set to inspire future generations of perfumers and fragrance enthusiasts alike.
