The Maison Martin Margiela fashion house was founded in 1988 by designer Martin Margiela, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and a member of the legendary "Antwerp Six". The perfume division of the house appeared in 2008, when a contract was signed with the L'Oréal concern. The brand's debut fragrance, Untitled, released in 2011, inherits the brand's philosophy of maximum anonymity and the absence of identifying marks. Martin Margiela, who has himself been leading a closed lifestyle for some time now, was the first to abandon the logo - instead, Maison Margiela products are marked with a white rectangle sewn onto the item with four simple stitches. Untitled is also not tied to gender. In 2012, the first three fragrances of the most extensive Maison Margiela collection, Replica, were released. By 2020, there were 23 fragrances: sixteen in the Replica collection (in eau de toilette concentration), five in the Replica Reproduction of Familiar Fantasies collection (in eau de parfum concentration), and two perfumed oils in the Replica Filters collection, which can be layered on any fragrance to achieve the desired effect: “blurring” or “shine”. Replica fragrances are designed to recreate familiar smells from different places - here is the smell of a flower shop in Paris, the sea air and coastal sand in Calvi, or the rich greenery and flowers of an English garden in Oxfordshire. In 2018, the Mutiny fragrance was released - the first perfume work of John Galliano as creative director of Maison Margiela. The author of the composition based on a note of tuberose was the legendary French perfumer Dominique Ropion.
